This Christmas break, like the last three ones, we are in Scotland. This year in the comfort of being a new parent and therefore permitted to not get up to much plus not having much to get back to London for, we decided to stay little beyond the year-end. Fittingly to our flavour, the rest of the town is ghostly on the morning of the 1st. In the looming stillness and to match the mood, we headed out to the Glasgow Necropolis.
I loved it. Not that this is a review of the place but I can't help but pin down some of the reasons why I think you should visit it.
- The number one reason is that it's ancient (dating back to 1825) and massive (around 50,000 burials).
- Given it's ancient, it's an amazing journey to look at a range of stunning Victorian typography all in one place.
- And finally, there is great diversity in types of structures commemorating the dead which makes it a sort of miniature city park.
We might turn this into a ritual and markedly it should remain the same.
